PolarWool™ Merino Wool Fisherman Beanie – Double Layer Knit Hat for Large Heads

Not reversible. The workman's history of the beanie lends meaning to the clunky seams. The warp yarn that I pulled passed the heated fiber test for being natural. Has a nice dense feel but reasonably thin, good for these Southern California winters. Could be the best fitting knit cap that I have used on my big head.

I wear wool whenever possible—base layers, socks, underwear—so I was glad to add this hat to my collection. The knit is dense, soft, and not itchy, exactly what I expect from a merino blend. Sizing is where things get tricky. I usually wear a Large in motorcycle and ski helmets. With the cuff folded, this hat feels a bit short to work well as a proper watch cap. It sits well above the ears. Unfolded, it has plenty of length but then feels a touch long near my eyes and to the base of my neck, better suited for XL or larger heads. For me it sits right in between—usable in both styles, but not perfect in either. That said, the construction is solid, the wool keeps me warm without overheating, and the color choices are versatile. If you’re truly a big-head wearer, unfolded it’s a great beanie. If you prefer a folded fisherman style, it may be best if your head runs smaller. Edit: I played around with it a bit more. Because the fold point is not determined you can do a small fold and work this hat as a watch cap even on a large size head.

**Background:** I love merino wool—socks, thermal underwear, base layers, gloves. I'm a big fan of this knit. My head circumference is 23 1/2 inches, so I was on the fence between sizes. I went with the XL/XXL. **Build Quality:** Very nice hat. I like the knitting, the colors, and the little name tag—it's not offensive and adds a tasteful accent. The fabric definitely feels like merino wool. There isn’t as much stretch as I had hoped, which might be related to my sizing choice—my fault. When I pull the fabric, it doesn’t feel as stretchy as some other hats. **Function:** Since I was unsure about the size and because I'm growing my hair out—plus I thought they might need more room—sometimes head size shifts, I chose the larger XL/XXL. It fits my head, but it's not as tight as I prefer. I'm pretty active, so I like a more secure fit. The material is definitely breathable; even with later summer warm weather, I'm not overheating while wearing this hat. It insulates and provides some warmth. I’d rate it as a lighter thickness of material. It’s probably suitable for fall and spring, but for deep winter, you might want something thicker. According to the sizing info on the listing—24 inches and above is for XL/XXL—I’d agree with that. It's just a bit big for my head.

80% Merino wool with 20% acrylic as a blend is probably my favorite at this point. You get a nice mix of breathable and odor resistant yet shape retaining and longer lasting. Going 100% on the wool flings you into the extreme of comfort but also care management, the latter of which is not my particular bag.

The big head design seems to work with this hat; I feel quite comfy donning this thing inside and outside. Honestly, the material mix seems to keep my head fairly well temperature balanced whether in the cold or warm weather. Lastly, it doesn��t seem to cling to or entrap an odor, so the value to me is great.

Nice & warm, decent stretch & fit for size. The seams are a bit . . . chunky on the inside, which makes it feel a little bulky, but ymmv. They certainly could have been done better I think.

This is a nice looking but quite small hat. I ordered the medium-large and have a fairly regular sized head, and with the brim flipped up it fits more like a watch cap than a regular beanie, stopping around the ears. If you want more coverage you can flip down the brim and bring it all the way down to the base of your neck, but I don't love the look of it like that.

In any case, this feels like a quality product. The merino wool is soft and warm, with a little acrylic to - I assume - give the fabric a little more stretch. It's a simple, unlined hat that should keep me toasty through the winter, and as this price I'm happy to recommend it.

High quality wool hat! It is the fisherman style so it doesn't come down over your ears unless you pull it down instead of folding it. It's warm and not itchy. It fits well over my pony tail. Overall I would recommend this for the price. I live in wisconsin so this kind of gear will be needed in the upcoming months.

This is a nice Merino wool beanie. I opted for the smaller (medium-large) size. I am a woman with an average sized head. It is fitted and snug but not too much so. My husband can also get it on without massive stretching, but he would probably opt for the larger size given the choice. It is a unisex style and I don't find the tag obtrusive or annoying.

Really nice fabric and color (got the olive green). It's comfortable and not itchy at all. I do like the flipping brim (is it called a brim with beanies?) as its already creased and gives you a nice look up or down.

I got the XL-XXL because I've got a giant head. TBH, I was hoping for it to be a little bigger. It fits me, but juuust barely. But I'm an outlier. I wear a 2XL motorcycle helmet and even that's a hair too snug.

- This comes over the tops of my ears better than the previous version, just as it should for this style hat. And it can be pulled/rolled down even further for a more traditional style that covers your ears completely.

I have a pretty big head (~24 1/4), so I was excited to try a hat designed specifically for big heads. It does what it says in on the tin: it fits comfortably. The fabric is nice and soft, and certainly feels like Merino wool. It's too warm outside to test it's thermal performance, but it feels warm.

I think the two-tone style looks pretty good, in a rugged way. As is the style of this sort of hat, with the brim rolled it won't keep your ears warm. But you can always roll it down.

I'll definitely consider buying this hat in other colors once it gets colder.

The first thing I noticed about this beanie is how thick the material is and it has a bit of a 'heft' to it, but in a good way. I put it on and it fit snug like it should, but not too tight. At first I was concerned about how tall it was, but it covered my ears nicely and that's what's important to me for a winter hat! There were so many different colors to choose from, but being a lifelong hunter I chose the black and green of course. I've even heard of this company and I've heard good things about their products, so I have high hopes for the longevity of this beanie.

This is a GREAT stocking cap/beanie/toque/whatever you call it where you're at. And I mean GREAT! It's soft, somehow not itchy even though it's made with some wool, but the best part is that it's *actually* made for bigger heads! No more squishing into too-tight stocking caps, no more "tiny head on a big body," no! This is a totally neutral (made for anyone) warm, really good looking hat!
It fits me (I don't like tight small beanies, I want a soft slouchy one that doesn't constrict) and it fits my husband, who has difficulty finding hats in his size. He tried to claim it for himself, so we've had to order one for him, because I'm keeping this one! Love that I found a stocking cap that actually works and fits.
